Wichita Falls, Burkburnett and Iowa Park

Ranch-country furniture for Wichita Falls homes

Burk Burnett, whose cattle carried the Four Sixes brand, set up his ranch headquarters near the site of present Wichita Falls in 1874, two years before the townsite was platted. The 1918 oil strike at Burkburnett brought the city a building boom. Here is how ranch pieces fit the houses that followed, and how to shop our San Antonio showroom from North Texas.

Ranch pieces for revival and Craftsman rooms

Frank Kell, a miller, railroad financier and rancher, and his brother-in-law Joseph A. Kemp were the city's two leading promoters for decades, according to the Handbook of Texas. The Frank Kell House at 900 Bluff St. is listed in the National Register as Classical Revival, and the Morningside Historic District, listed in 1985, is recorded with period revival styles and Craftsman bungalows.

Ranch furniture can live in both. In a Classical Revival room, choose tooled leather and cowhide on scrolled or turned legs, so the piece keeps the room's formality. In a Craftsman house, a cowhide sofa or a saddle hung as a light can stand out plainly.

  • Classical Revival room: tooled leather and cowhide on scrolled or turned legs.
  • Craftsman bungalow: a cowhide sofa, with a windmill-blade or saddle light overhead.
  • Bedroom or kitchen: a tooled leather dresser, or tooled leather barstools at the counter.

Burkburnett and Iowa Park

  • Burkburnett

Ten miles north of Wichita Falls, Burkburnett grew on former Burnett ranch land, where town lots were auctioned in 1907, and its name joins his two. Oil came in 1912, with larger strikes in 1918 and 1925, and a Cosmopolitan story about the boom later inspired the 1940 film "Boom Town." About 390 miles from our showroom, roughly seven hours without traffic.

  • Iowa Park

Five miles west of Wichita Falls, Iowa Park was founded in 1888 on the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. Until 1910, Burnett's Wichita County properties ran under the Four Sixes brand from headquarters at Iowa Park. About 391 miles, roughly seven hours without traffic.
