Waco, Woodway and Hewitt
Rustic and Western furniture for Waco, Woodway and Hewitt
After 1868 Waco sat on a spur of the Chisholm Trail, and in 1870 a suspension bridge opened across the Brazos. Castle Heights, platted in 1923, added Tudor, Colonial and Mediterranean revival houses. Our San Antonio showroom has pieces for both chapters: Western tooled leather and the Lone Star, and carved wood and iron. Here is how to choose, and how to shop from a little over three hours away.
Waco
From the cattle trail to Castle Heights
The Handbook of Texas says 600,000 to 700,000 cattle had been driven through Waco by 1871, on the spur of the Chisholm Trail it joined after 1868. The suspension bridge that opened over the Brazos in 1870 became, in 1970, the first Waco place listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Castle Heights came later. Its Texas Historical Commission marker says W.T. Herrick and W.L. Wollett platted it in 1923 and named it for nearby Cottonland Castle, with curved streets, traffic circles and revival houses in styles such as Tudor, Colonial, Georgian, Classical and Mediterranean. The City of Waco applied in 2008 to nominate the neighborhood to the National Register.
Let the house decide how far to go. A den or a primary bedroom can carry one Western piece in honor of the trail years. A Mediterranean house takes carved wood and iron from room to room, while a Tudor, Colonial or Georgian room looks right with a single carved mirror or iron chandelier.
- Den or study: a tooled leather armchair or a Lone Star dresser, not both.
- Mediterranean revival: carved wood, scrolled iron and onyx.
- Tudor, Colonial or Georgian: one carved or iron piece per room.

Woodway
The City of Woodway says residents drew its name from two earlier ones, Woodland West and the Village of Midway, and that the village was created when the ballots were certified on June 20, 1955. A replica of Whitehall Church, first built in 1877, stands at the Carleen Bright Arboretum. Woodway is about 174 miles from our showroom, roughly three and a quarter hours without traffic.
Hewitt
Hewitt dates from 1882, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad laid track through it, and it is named for George A. Hewitt, a railroad director, according to the Handbook of Texas. Residents voted to incorporate in 1960. The drive from Hewitt is about 170 miles, a little over three hours without traffic.
