Victoria, Goliad and Cuero
Rustic furniture for Victoria, Goliad and Cuero homes
Victoria architect Jules Carl Leffland drew large wooden houses with wraparound porches and entrances on two sides. A house with two entrances needs a landing spot at each one. Here is what suits Victoria's older rooms and its neighbors, and how to make one trip to our San Antonio showroom count.
Victoria
Furnishing a Leffland-era house
The Handbook of Texas says Danish-born architect Jules Carl Leffland, working from Victoria, had designed at least 80 structures by 1910. The Abraham Levytansky home of 1898, Leffland's own home of 1900 and the J. V. Vandenberge home of 1908 are large wooden residences with tripartite door and window arrangements, wraparound porches and double entrances on two sides.
Two entrances mean two entry walls to furnish. Give the busier door a hall tree with a mirror and a seat, and give the other a bench with drawers or a trunk. Save the large case goods for the rooms beyond.
- Main entry: a hall tree that holds coats and keys and has a mirror for one last look.
- Side entry: a hall bench or trunk that takes bags and boots.
- Measure both doorways and the wall height before you choose a hall tree.

Victoria
Victoria Advocate editor John Stilwell Munn gave the town its nickname, City of Roses, in the 1880s, for its gardens. About 126 miles from the showroom, roughly two and a half hours without traffic.
Goliad
Presidio La Bahía went up on a hill where sand, limestone and timber were plentiful, and in 1829 the town had stone houses flanked by post-and-mortar jacals. Timber pieces belong in a stone room. About 108 miles, roughly two and a quarter hours without traffic.
Cuero
Cuero takes its name from Cuero Creek, which the Spanish called Arroyo del Cuero, the Creek of the Rawhide. A cowhide bench or stool is a fitting nod. About 100 miles, a little under two hours without traffic.
