Furniture for Tyler's Colonial Revival and Tudor houses
The Texas Historical Commission records two architectural styles for Tyler's Azalea, Charnwood and Brick Streets historic districts: Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival. They ask different things of furniture. This guide covers both, a nod to the city's roses and how to shop our San Antonio showroom from Tyler.
Tyler's historic districts
Colonial Revival in pairs, Tudor in carved wood
Charnwood was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, Azalea in 2003 and Brick Streets in 2004. The city's own landmark program, begun in 1983, lists 138 local landmarks.
Our suggestion for a Colonial Revival room is to buy in pairs: two side chairs, two nightstands, two lamps, set either side of a bed, a window or a sideboard. Tudor Revival looks back to England in the Tudor years, and its rooms can carry darker wood, deep carving, leather and iron, with one large carved piece as the anchor.
- Colonial Revival: matched pairs on either side of a bed, a window or a sideboard.
- Tudor Revival: a carved armchair at the head of the table and carved side chairs along it.
- Older houses: measure stair turns and doorways before choosing a bed or a tall case piece.
Roses and carved flowers
A nod to the rose city
When a peach blight wiped out much of the area's fruit industry, many farmers around Tyler turned to roses. By the 1940s, the Handbook of Texas says, more than half of the U.S. supply of rose bushes was grown no more than 10 miles from Tyler, and the Texas Rose Festival is held each October. Furniture making here is older still: the city's history lists a cabinet shop and furniture factories among Tyler's small industries by 1860.
A rose garden indoors would be too much. A carved flower on a drawer front, leaves worked into copper or a floral band across a headboard says enough.
