Texarkana, Texas and Arkansas

Furniture for Texarkana homes on both sides of the state line

State Line Avenue runs along the line between Texas and Arkansas, and the federal building at its center, finished in 1933, stands in both states on a base of Texas pink granite with walls of gray Arkansas limestone. We have sold to clients in Texarkana. Our one showroom is in San Antonio; here is what suits the houses on each side of the line, and how to shop from there.

Octagonal rooms at the Ace of Clubs House

Two blocks from downtown on the Texas side, J.H. Draughn built a raised two-story house in 1883 and 1884 whose plan resembles the three leaves and stem of a club. Its National Register nomination describes an Italianate exterior and, inside, a two-story octagonal rotunda with octagonal rooms on three sides. The Moore family, who owned it from 1894, had moved across the state line after their house in Arkansas burned.

Rooms with angled walls and bays rarely offer one long wall to fill. Round tables and pieces that look finished from every side suit them better than long cabinets.

  • Dining room: a round table on a single pedestal.
  • Beside a chair in a bay: a round side table.
  • Entry or rotunda: a stone-topped console on an open iron base.

Craftsman houses on Beech Street

East of State Line Avenue, the Beech Street Historic District runs roughly from 14th to 23rd streets. Its National Register nomination counts 74 houses, 31 of them built from 1905 to 1920, mostly Craftsman, Prairie and American Foursquare, along a street paved with brick in 1904.

Houses like those take plain, solid pieces: a ladder-back chair with a leather seat, a rocking chair by a window, a table whose top does the talking. The federal building pairs Texas granite with Arkansas limestone, and a stone top on a wood or iron base makes the same pairing indoors.
