Sherman, Denison and Lake Texoma
Furniture for Sherman, Denison and Lake Texoma homes
Sherman named its first streets for Texas heroes and native trees. Denison was laid out for the Katy railroad in 1872. Lake Texoma, behind Denison Dam on the Red River, has shores in Texas and Oklahoma. Here is what suits the houses in each place, and how to shop our San Antonio showroom from Grayson County.
Three places
Sherman, Denison and the lake
Sherman
Sherman moved to its present site in 1848, and the city's history says its streets were named for Texas heroes and native trees, Mulberry, Pecan, Elm, Walnut and Cherry among them. The same history names Washington Iron Works, opened in 1876, as its oldest industry. About 335 miles from our showroom, roughly six hours without traffic.
Denison
Denison was laid out in the summer of 1872 for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad and named for the Katy's vice president, George Denison. Dwight D. Eisenhower was born there in 1890, in a modest two-story frame house that is now a state historic site. About 344 miles, a little over six hours without traffic.
Lake Texoma
The lake lies on the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma, held by Denison Dam five miles northwest of Denison. It opened informally in 1944, and Eisenhower State Park opened on its south shore in 1958, according to the Handbook of Texas.
What suits these rooms
Grain, iron and a modest scale
Streets named for pecan and walnut trees and an iron works that opened in 1876 make an easy case for wood with visible grain and for iron. Sherman's older houses include the Capt. Noble Allan Birge House at 727 W. Birge St., which the Texas Historical Commission lists as Queen Anne and Colonial Revival; a round wood table or an iron candelabra suits rooms of that age.
In Denison, the Eisenhower birthplace shows the scale of a modest 1870s frame house, furnished as an 1890s home with an entry hall. In rooms that size, a hall bench, a small buffet and one good mirror go further than a suite. At the lake, driftwood and other natural shapes look at home.
- Sherman: a round wood table and an iron candelabra.
- Denison: a paneled hall bench, a small buffet and one good mirror.
- Lake Texoma: a driftwood mirror or chandelier.
