Seguin, Kingsbury and Geronimo
Rustic furniture for Seguin, Kingsbury and Geronimo homes
Seguin's early builders poured houses in lime concrete, and many of the Victorian houses along its Austin Street are Queen Anne. Seguin is about 50 minutes from our Loop 1604 showroom without traffic. This guide covers what suits those rooms, notes on Kingsbury and Geronimo and whether to make the drive.
The concrete era
Greek Revival in poured lime concrete
The Handbook of Texas describes Sebastopol, built in 1856 and 1857 by Col. Joshua Wright Young, as a Greek Revival house of concrete made from local gravel and lime and poured into slip-form wall castings, a process developed by John Esten Park. It is one of several surviving structures of some 90 built that way. The city's 2019 historic resources survey calls the 1840s and 1850s Seguin's concrete era and records a Greek Revival limecrete house from 1850 on North Austin Street.
A house built that early and that solidly suits a few substantial pieces rather than many small ones: a long dining table, a buffet on the main wall, a mirror above it. Keep the finishes quiet so the house itself stays the focus.
- Center a mirror over a buffet or console on the main wall.
- Measure doorways and stairs before choosing a large case piece.
Austin Street
Queen Anne houses and their bay windows
The same survey found that the Victorian-era houses along Austin Street were built mainly in the Queen Anne style, including many grand, high-style examples such as the Free Classic Queen Anne Blumberg-Ayres House of 1906. It describes the style's asymmetrical facades, partial-width or wraparound porches, projecting or cutaway bay windows and ornament such as spindlework and turned porch supports.
Rooms like these take pieces with detail of their own. A round table on a pedestal fits a bay window, chairs with patterned backs answer the ornament, and turned legs echo the porch posts. Where the walls break into bays and angles, several smaller pieces work better than one long one.
