Belvin Street and nearby
Victorian and Colonial Revival rooms
The Texas Historical Commission's Atlas lists the Belvin Street Historic District in the National Register since 1983, in the Colonial Revival and Late Victorian styles, for the periods 1875 to 1899 and 1900 to 1924. Nearby listed houses include the Greek Revival and Italianate Ragsdale-Jackman-Yarbough House on West San Antonio Street, Late Victorian houses on Burleson Street and the Prairie School Williams-Tarbutton House on Lindsey Street.
A few carved or tooled pieces sit comfortably beside the detail of houses like these. Choose one with real presence for each main room, such as a tooled leather rocking chair or a small buffet with carved doors, and keep the rest simple.
- Late Victorian room: tooled leather, carving and a buffet with carved doors.
- Colonial Revival room: one carved case piece, kept in proportion to its wall.
Dunbar
Folk and Craftsman houses
A Texas Historical Commission draft National Register nomination for the Dunbar Historic District says its earliest houses are National Folk form: one-story, rectangular-plan, wood-frame houses built from about 1900 to about 1925, four of the five with full-width porches. Some had board-and-batten siding, less expensive than horizontal weatherboard. Craftsman-influenced and bungalow-form houses from about 1925 followed, and the city made Dunbar a local historic district in 2003.
In a one-story frame house, measure first, then choose pieces scaled to each room: a nightstand where a dresser would crowd, a small buffet, a pair of side chairs. Craftsman rooms suit plain, sturdy wood and leather without much ornament.

San Marcos and Martindale
San Marcos
The Hays County seat is on I-35, 25 miles south of Austin. The International-Great Northern Railroad arrived on Aug. 31, 1880, and Southwest Texas State Normal School opened in 1903. The city's oldest local historic district, Belvin Street, dates from a 1974 ordinance. About 46 miles and about 55 minutes from the showroom without traffic.
Martindale
Nancy Martindale, who came to Texas from Mississippi in 1851, donated the land for the townsite in 1855. The town lies 10 miles west of Lockhart in Caldwell County, and by 1914 it had four churches, a hotel, three cotton gins and a bank. About 53 miles and a little over an hour.
