San Angelo and Paint Rock
Rustic furniture for San Angelo homes
Fort Concho, a National Historic Landmark, was built of locally quarried limestone, with stonemasons and carpenters from the Fredericksburg area on its early buildings. Our showroom carries the heavy wood, iron and leather that suit rooms with that kind of weight. Here is how to choose, and how to shop from about three and a half hours away.
Fort Concho and Oscar Ruffini
Stone walls and symmetry
By 1879 Fort Concho had some 40 permanent stone buildings around its parade ground, and Capt. Robert G. Carter remembered the officers' quarters as "tasty, elegant, imposing." After the Army left in 1889, most of the buildings escaped demolition by becoming homes and storage space.
In town, architect Oscar Ruffini designed about 40 downtown buildings, and his first major commission was the Tom Green County Courthouse. The Handbook of Texas credits his work with economy of form, symmetry of composition and horizontality of orientation. Those make good rules for a room: pairs on either side of a bed or a doorway, long pieces kept low, nothing fussy.
- Stone or thick plaster walls: dark wood, iron and leather hold their own.
- Symmetry: matching nightstands or lamps on either side of the bed.
- Long walls: a console or bench kept low, centered under a mirror or a painting.
