Midland

Copper, iron and carved wood for Midland homes

Midland's oil boom began in the 1920s, and by 1929, 36 oil companies had offices in the city. One house from the decade that followed, now in the National Register, mixes Colonial, Tudor and Mediterranean ideas in brick, stone, copper and iron. Here is what suits rooms like it, from our San Antonio showroom, and how to shop from a little under six hours away.

The Turner House

A 1930s house that mixes its sources

Dallas architect Anton F. Korn Jr. designed the Fred and Juliette Turner House at 1705 W. Missouri, built in 1936 and 1937 and listed in the National Register in 1988. Its nomination describes an amalgam of Colonial, Tudor and Mediterranean influences in Flemish bond brick, with copper flashing and gutters and a carved limestone entrance under a forged iron balcony rail. Behind the house, a brick garage and stable is topped by a cupola and weather vane. The house was later given to the Museum of the Southwest.

A room in a house like that takes a mix rather than a matched set. Let copper and forged iron repeat what is on the outside, and add one carved or leather piece for the Tudor side.

  • Copper: a hammered copper table or desk echoes copper trim outside.
  • Forged iron: a scrolled table base for the iron at the front door.
  • Tudor rooms: one tooled leather chest rather than a full bedroom suite.
  • A study or sunroom: a copper-topped desk on an iron base.
