Lubbock

Carved and ranch furniture for Lubbock homes

Two Lubbock landmarks show two ways to furnish a room: the Spanish Renaissance carving of the Texas Tech campus and the restored ranch buildings of the National Ranching Heritage Center. Our San Antonio showroom carries pieces in both directions. Here is how to choose, and how to shop from about six and a half hours away.

Texas Tech

Spanish Renaissance carving

The Texas Technological College Historic District, listed in the National Register in 1996, covers the historic campus. Its nomination says most of the buildings apply Spanish Renaissance design, the early phase known as Plateresque, with orders, classic moldings and acanthus scrolls; doors are centerpieces for decoration that often covers the whole height of a wall. William Ward Watkin, associate architect on early buildings, tied the style to the old Spanish missions of Texas.

Carved furniture brings that vocabulary down to room scale: a drawer front carved with rosettes, a low table whose sides roll with carved scrolls. One or two such pieces are enough. Let plain walls frame them, the way the campus walls frame its doorways.

  • A carved table or chest can carry a living room on its own.
  • Pair carving with plain upholstery or plain plaster, not more carving.
  • Look for scrolls and leaves in the carving rather than geometric patterns.

National Ranching Heritage Center

Ranch buildings, furnished as they were

Next to the Texas Tech campus, the National Ranching Heritage Center gathers historic ranch structures moved from many places and restored and furnished to their original appearance. The Handbook of Texas lists among them an 1890 half-dugout, a 1904 house of sotol stalks and cedar posts, a large two-story Victorian house from 1909, cattle-shipping pens from the King Ranch and three types of windmill.

Used one at a time, ranch pieces read as references rather than costume: a windmill-blade light over the table, a lamp built on a wagon hub, a laced leather barstool at the counter.
