Longview and Kilgore

Furniture for Longview and Kilgore, from oil-boom houses to brick ranches

Longview's high-style Period Revival houses date to the East Texas oil boom of the 1930s, and the postwar years lined its north side with brick ranches. Kilgore sat near the center of the field. This guide matches pieces to each kind of house and covers shopping our San Antonio showroom from East Texas.

Longview

Period Revival houses and brick ranches

Longview was laid out in the early 1870s, when the Southern Pacific Railroad built west from Marshall onto land bought from Ossamus Hitch Methvin Sr.; the name reportedly came from the view at his house. After a major fire in 1877, the frame buildings downtown gave way to brick and stone.

The city's 2016 historic resource survey plan calls Nuggett Hill a small neighborhood of high-style Period Revival houses from the 1930s, and the Texas Historical Commission lists Mission or Spanish Revival, Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival as its styles. North of Marshall Avenue, the same plan describes thousands of Early Ranch and Ranch Style houses, with hundreds of brick ranches along North Fourth Street.

  • Spanish Revival: iron and onyx light over the table, and cabinet doors under an arch.
  • Tudor or Colonial Revival: tooled leather and iron hardware on a plain wood case.
  • Brick ranch den: a leather sofa and a low, heavy coffee table.

Kilgore

Kilgore and the World's Richest Acre

Kilgore began in 1872, when the International-Great Northern Railroad platted a town and named it for Constantine Buckley Kilgore, who sold the railroad its 174-acre townsite. The East Texas oilfield, found in the fall of 1930, made it a boomtown. The Handbook of Texas describes wells drilled in the yards of homes and one city block with 44 wells. At the height of the boom, more than 1,100 producing wells stood inside the city limits, and part of one downtown block became known as the World's Richest Acre.

A nod to that history needs no theme. Heavy timber and iron do it quietly: an onyx top resting on old railroad beams, or a sofa table bound in iron straps.
