Killeen, Temple, Belton and Harker Heights
Rustic furniture for Killeen, Temple, Belton and Harker Heights
Bell County packs a long history into a short drive. Belton was laid out around its courthouse square in 1850. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway started Temple and Killeen in the early 1880s, and Harker Heights began with lots sold in 1957. Our San Antonio showroom is about two and a half hours away, a little more from Killeen. Here is what suits each kind of house, and how to plan the trip.
Belton
Rooms built around a fireplace
Belton, first named Nolanville, was chosen as the Bell County seat in 1850 and laid out on the Shelbyville plan, with a large courthouse square at its center. The city has designated five historic districts, and its walking tour describes the Curtis Mansion on North Main Street, built in 1902, as a late Victorian house that mingles Queen Anne and Shingle style features, with fireplaces in every room. Even the 1874 county jail, built of native limestone, has been a private residence since the late 19th century.
In a room arranged around a fireplace, the wall above the mantel is the place for a long mirror or a large painting. Keep the pieces beside it lower than the mantel shelf, and give the tall case pieces the walls that face it.
- Over the mantel: a wide mirror with a strong frame.
- A bedroom with a fireplace: a dresser and its mirror on the opposite wall.
- An old limestone or frame house: measure every doorway before choosing case goods.
Temple, Killeen and Harker Heights
Two railroad towns and a 1957 subdivision
Temple
Temple began in 1880 as a Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe construction camp called Temple Junction, for chief engineer Bernard Moore Temple; locals called it Mud Town or Tanglefoot. The American Desk Company was established there in 1921, a fine excuse for a carved or copper desk. Temple is about 142 miles from us, a little over two and a half hours without traffic.
Killeen
The same railroad platted a 70-block town here and named it for Frank P. Killeen, its assistant general manager; the first train came through in May 1882. Our White Onyx & Old Rail Road Beam Coffee Table nods to that start. Killeen is about 141 miles from the showroom, about two hours and 40 minutes without traffic.
Harker Heights
Landowners Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern began selling lots here in 1957, and voters incorporated the city in 1960, naming it in honor of Kern. Whatever the age of your house, measure the doorways and the turn into each room before you choose a large case piece. Plan on a 141-mile drive, about two hours and 40 minutes each way without traffic.
