Houston
Rustic and hacienda furniture for Houston homes
River Oaks' older houses are period revivals, from Georgian to Mediterranean. In rooms like those, one strong carved, leather or copper piece from our San Antonio showroom does more than a matched set. Here is how to choose it, and how to shop from Houston.
River Oaks
One strong piece for a period-revival room
River Oaks was developed from the 1920s by Michael Hogg and Hugh Potter. City of Houston landmark reports say architect Charles Oliver designed 75 houses there in styles including Georgian, Tudor, Dutch Colonial, Mediterranean and Norman, and that about six of his Mediterranean houses still stand. Birdsall Briscoe's houses there, from 1926 to 1940, show the same range.
In a Mediterranean house, hacienda pieces suit the whole room. In a Georgian, Tudor or Regency room, choose one carved or copper piece and let it stand on its own: a mirror over a console, a desk in a study, a nightstand in a guest room.
- Mediterranean house: carved wood, iron and copper throughout.
- Georgian, Tudor or Regency: one carved mirror or copper case piece per room.
- A study: a carved desk is the piece the room is built around.
