Helotes, Leon Valley and the Bandera Road

Rustic furniture and home bars for Helotes and Leon Valley

Helotes grew up around a stage stop, a saloon and a dance hall on the old Bandera Road, and Joseph Huebner's homestead in Leon Valley was a stagecoach stop too. This guide is about the room where people gather at home: the bar. It covers bars and stools from our San Antonio showroom, six nearby places and how to shop from about 20 minutes away without traffic.

The Bandera Road

A stage stop, a saloon and a dance hall

By 1873 Helotes, a stage stop on the Bandera Road, had a post office; its first postmaster, Carl Mueller, and his wife, Amalie, also ran the Helotes Stagecoach Inn. In 1881 Arnold and Mollie Gugger ran a general store, blacksmith shop and saloon where the road crossed Helotes Creek, and that corner became the center of town. Bert Hileman later added a dance hall, and John T. Floore opened his Country Store by 1946. The city notes that the dance hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark.

A home bar carries that history better than a themed room. Choose the bar for the wall it will stand against and the people who will gather around it, then choose stools to fit its height.

  • Measure the wall, and leave room behind the bar for whoever is pouring.
  • Ask about the bar's height and each stool's seat height before you pair them.
  • Stools with arms take more room along a bar than armless ones, so count seats first.
