Fredericksburg, Stonewall and Luckenbach
Furniture for Fredericksburg, Stonewall and Luckenbach homes
Fredericksburg's own design guidelines sort its old houses by style, from handmade German stone and fachwerk to Folk Victorian houses trimmed with machine-made porch work. Each takes different furniture. Our showroom on Loop 1604 in San Antonio is about an hour and 10 minutes from Fredericksburg without traffic.
Fredericksburg's design guidelines
Handmade or machine-made: read the house first
The city's historic district design guidelines describe German vernacular houses, built from about 1846 to 1910 in fachwerk or limestone, as one or one-and-a-half stories with thick walls and narrow windows, handmade craftsmanship and little or no applied ornament. Folk Victorian houses, from about 1870 to 1910, are defined by machine-made decorative detailing on simple folk house forms, with turned balusters and spindle friezes on their porches.
Let that difference set the furniture. A German stone room wants plain, heavy wood and iron with almost no carving, plus a good light over the table, because narrow windows let in little daylight. A Folk Victorian room can take the carving and scrollwork its porch already shows.
- Stone or fachwerk room: a plain wood stool, a drum table on iron legs, an iron light.
- Folk Victorian room: a carved end table or a Tiffany-style chandelier to answer the porch trim.
- A log house moved in from the Upland South, as the guidelines say some were in the 1970s and 1980s: treat it like the stone rooms.
- Light first: an iron chandelier over the table before any new case piece.
Town by town
Three places, three histories
Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg was founded May 8, 1846, and the city says its immigrant families were each given a town lot of 100 by 200 feet and a 10-acre outlot. Its first public building, the Vereins-Kirche, was an octagon nicknamed the coffee mill; a stone replica followed in 1936. About 61 miles, an hour and 10 minutes without traffic.
Stonewall
Andreas Lindig built Gillespie County's first limekiln at Stonewall, the Handbook of Texas says. Nearby, the native limestone house Wilhelm Meyer built in the mid-1890s became the core of the Texas White House on the LBJ Ranch, which the National Park Service says grew through seven additions. About 69 miles, an hour and 20 minutes without traffic.
Luckenbach
Mrs. Albert Luckenbach, born Minnie Engel, opened a store and saloon here, and the Handbook says the general store William Engel opened remains in its original building; the dance hall was rebuilt by the early 1930s with a maple floor. It lies a few miles east of Fredericksburg on Farm Road 1376, south of U.S. 290.
