El Paso

Spanish Colonial and copper furniture for El Paso homes

El Paso architects such as Mabel Welch and Henry Trost designed houses with the Chihuahuan Desert and the region's ties to Spain and Mexico in mind. Our San Antonio showroom carries the carved wood, iron and copper that suit those rooms, and we have sold to clients in El Paso. Here is how to choose from nearly nine hours away.

Manhattan Heights and Sunset Heights

Spanish Colonial Revival, by design

Manhattan Heights grew on land where the Federal Copper Company ran a smelter from 1901 to 1908, and its first streets were named Federal, Bronze, Copper, Silver and Gold. The city's historic design guidelines say many of its houses contain Spanish Colonial Revival elements, and that Mabel Welch championed that style as the most appropriate one for El Paso.

Sunset Heights, north of downtown, is more varied: bungalows, American Foursquares and Tudor, Classical, Queen Anne and Spanish Colonial Revival houses, most of them built by 1916. Henry Trost's own house there, finished in 1909, adapted the Prairie style to the desert sun with wide, overhanging eaves and balconies that shade nearly all of its windows.

  • Stucco walls and arched openings: an iron chandelier and chairs with twisted posts and tooled leather.
  • A bungalow or Foursquare: one copper table or carved mirror as the accent, not a full hacienda room.
  • A Tudor or Queen Anne house: keep the hacienda piece to the hall or a study.
  • A nod to the street names: copper on a tabletop, where it gets used every day.

The Magoffin Home

Adobe walls with a Territorial accent

The Magoffin Home State Historic Site in downtown El Paso is the adobe house Joseph and Octavia Magoffin moved into in 1877. The Texas Historical Commission says its adobe construction reflects the Spanish and Territorial architecture of the Southwest borderlands, with the influence of the Greek Revival style.

Thick plastered walls give heavy, dark pieces a calm background. The Greek Revival side of that tradition suggests order, so center a mirror over a cabinet, set chairs in pairs and hang one chandelier over the table.
