Eagle Pass
Ranch furniture for Eagle Pass and Maverick County homes
Maverick County is named for Samuel A. Maverick, whose wandering herd gave rise to the word maverick, an unbranded calf. Ranching there began as early as 1765, on a Spanish land grant. Here is how to bring that history indoors with cowhide, saddle leather and the Lone Star, and how to build a shortlist before the drive.
Fort Duncan and the courthouse
Stone walls and ranch pieces
When Fort Duncan was set up above Eagle Pass in 1849, the Handbook of Texas notes, there was ample stone but no timber for building; its buildings included a stone hospital. The fort, now Fort Duncan Park, has been in the National Register since 1971, with seven original buildings restored and the old headquarters a museum. The Maverick County Courthouse of 1885 has high windows and, in the Handbook's words, an overall Spanish fortress appearance.
Against stone or plain walls, ranch pieces read clearly: cowhide panels, tooled and stitched leather, carved wood. Use one strong ranch piece per room and let quiet walls frame it.
- Living room: a carved console or one cowhide piece, set against plain wood.
- Bedroom: a Lone Star dresser and nightstand, with the rest kept simple.
- Bar or kitchen counter: saddle-leather stools as the single ranch nod.
