Dripping Springs and Driftwood

Lighting and furniture for Dripping Springs and Driftwood homes

In 2014 Dripping Springs became the first city in Texas designated an International Dark Sky Community, the city says. Its ordinance governs outdoor light; this guide is about the light inside. Our San Antonio showroom on Loop 1604 is about an hour and 20 minutes from Dripping Springs without traffic.

A dark-sky town

Light the rooms, not the sky

Dripping Springs adopted its Outdoor Lighting Ordinance in 2000. In 2014 it became the first city in Texas, and the sixth in the world, designated an International Dark Sky Community, and the city lists keeping unwanted light from intruding onto a neighbor's property among its reasons.

Indoors, plan light in layers instead of one bright ceiling fixture: a chandelier over the dining table, a lamp beside each chair where people read and a low lamp on a console for the evening. Shades and lower fixtures keep the light where you use it, which suits a house whose windows look out on a dark sky.

  • Over the dining table: one beam or onyx chandelier.
  • Beside seating: a table or floor lamp at each reading spot.
  • On a console: a small lamp for evening instead of overhead light.
  • For a porch or patio fixture, check the city's Outdoor Lighting Ordinance first.

Town by town

Two towns on the old roads

  • Dripping Springs

On the old Austin to Fredericksburg road, with a post office since 1857. Dripping Springs Academy, opened in 1881, had a stone main building that served as the public schoolhouse from 1889 to 1949. The city's Mercer, Old Fitzhugh and Hays historic districts were set up between 2007 and 2015. About 64 miles, an hour and 20 minutes without traffic.

  • Driftwood

Driftwood, 17 miles northwest of San Marcos in central Hays County, grew up in the 1880s as a supply center for nearby ranches and farms. By 1890 it had a post office, a school, churches, a cotton gin and a general store. About 75 miles by the route we checked, roughly an hour and a half without traffic.
