Bryan

Two-story houses and two-bedroom bungalows

William Joel Bryan, a nephew of Stephen F. Austin, donated the townsite in 1859, and it was platted and named for him that year, according to the Handbook of Texas. The City of Bryan's guide to the East Side Historic District, one of its oldest neighborhoods, shows how far house sizes range within a few blocks. The Astin-Porter House of 1902 is a two-story Classical Revival house with a two-tiered veranda on Corinthian columns, and the Hall House of the same year is a two-story transition from Victorian to American Four-Square. Nearby stand the bungalows that the guide says won immense popularity in Bryan between the wars, among them one on East 30th Street that originally had two bedrooms and a glassed-in porch.

In a bungalow, choose pieces that leave room to walk: a small buffet rather than a long one, a corner bookcase, a side table instead of a second chair. A two-story house with large rooms can take an XL bookcase or an XXL buffet along its longest wall.

  • Bungalow: small and corner pieces, chosen one wall at a time.
  • Two-story house: one large piece per room, on the longest wall.
  • Either way: ask about each piece's dimensions before you decide.

College Station

Campus houses, large and small

Texas A&M opened in 1876, and the community took its name from the College Station post office that opened in 1877. The city incorporated in 1938. The City of College Station says 109 houses stood on the campus that year, ranging from large Queen Annes to small bungalows and cottages. After a 1939 resolution to vacate them, some were sold and moved off campus between 1941 and 1972. The first neighborhoods, College Park and Oakwood, began in the 1920s, and one of the city's Here in 1938 homes is a Cape Cod cottage built that year on Park Place.

So a College Station house can be a moved campus cottage or a much larger home a few streets away. Measure the room before you shop. In a small room, one piece with presence, such as an onyx-topped side table or a corner bookcase, does more than several smaller ones.
