Rustic furniture for Canyon Lake homes

Canyon Lake began filling in 1964 over farm and ranch land in the Guadalupe River valley, beside older communities that grew up around country stores. Our showroom on Loop 1604 is about 50 minutes away without traffic. This guide covers pieces with a ranch and country store character, each community's history and whether to make the drive.

Since the dam

Ranch and country store pieces for lake-era houses

Work on Canyon Dam began on June 27, 1958, and the lake began filling on June 16, 1964. The Handbook of Texas says the first subdivisions, including Canyon Lake Hills and Canyon Lake Village, drew residents even as the water rose. By 1967 there were 46 subdivisions on the shore and 14 more in the surrounding hills, and more than 80 neighborhoods by the mid-1980s.

Flooding part of the valley cost the area farm and ranch land, and the communities around it began as trading posts, stores and post offices. Pieces that recall that working past suit these houses: a painted chest at the foot of a bed, a trunk-style table, cowhide on a bench, stools at a counter.

  • A chest adds storage without another case piece.
  • Use cowhide once per room, on a bench or a stool.
  • Measure stairs and doorways before choosing a chest or a long bench.

Around the lake

Canyon Lake and its older communities

  • Canyon Lake

The Census Bureau recognized the Canyon Lake area as a distinct community in 1980, taking in older settlements such as Startzville and Sattler, and it had its own post office by the mid-1980s. About 32 miles and about 50 minutes from the showroom without traffic.

  • Sattler

William Sattler opened a post office in his home in 1856. The community was also known as Mountain Valley, for its school, and as Walhalla, for the Walhalla Singing Club organized there in 1877. It revived in the mid-1960s, after the dam was finished.

  • Startzville

Members of the Startz family started it in 1935 with a small store on Farm Road 2673. It grew with the subdivisions that followed the dam's completion in 1964, and Startzville Elementary School opened in 2008.

  • Fischer

Hermann Fischer settled here in 1853 and built a log trading post on the Devil's Backbone road between San Marcos and Blanco. In 1967 Fischer was still described as a country store and post office at a rural crossroads. The lake lies 4 miles to the south.
