Bulverde, Spring Branch and Smithson Valley
Rustic furniture for Bulverde and Spring Branch homes
Bulverde's first settlers built with hewn post oak and cedar logs, then with quarried stone, and laid their rock walls dry, without mortar. Our showroom on Loop 1604 is about 20 minutes from Bulverde without traffic and about half an hour from Spring Branch. This guide covers what suits rooms with that heritage, each community's story and the drive.
Logs, stone and dry-laid walls
What suits a room with stone and timber
The City of Bulverde's history says the earliest homes were built of hewn post oak and cedar logs and later homes mostly of quarried stone. Of the eight original stone homes, five remain: the Pieper, Voges, Obst, Poss and Hitzfelder homes. The area's first store, built around 1873 by Henry Voges Jr., was quarried stone too. Between 1850 and 1890 many rock walls were laid dry and shimmed with chips, and building with fieldstone became popular in the area.
Rooms with that kind of history favor plain, heavy materials over polish: a thick slab with its natural edge, a piece of root wood, a drum of planks, a little iron. One or two such pieces per room are plenty.
- Against stone or plaster, choose warm wood: a slab console, a root bench or stool, a drum table.
- Keep iron to bases and legs, so the wood reads first.
- Ask about each piece's dimensions before planning a long wall around it.

Bulverde, Spring Branch and Smithson Valley
Bulverde
Bulverde was settled in 1850 as Pieper Settlement, on Cibolo Creek. Today's city was formed from five separate cities through 22 elections that began in 1996, and it took the name City of Bulverde on May 11, 1999. About 16 miles and about 20 minutes from the showroom without traffic.
Spring Branch
The D. Knibbe family settled here in 1852 and named it for a spring that flows into the Guadalupe River. The post office opened in the Knibbe store in 1858, and on Aug. 27, 1867, mail between New Braunfels and Fredericksburg again ran through Spring Branch. About 23 miles and about half an hour.
Smithson Valley
Named for Ben Smithson, who settled in 1856, it was a supply and social center with a cotton gin, a store and an amusement hall by the 1880s, and cutting cedar posts became an important local industry. It has no Census point to route to, so we give no drive time.
