Rustic and hacienda furniture for Austin homes

Our showroom on Loop 1604 in San Antonio is about an hour and a half from central Austin without traffic, and a little less from Dripping Springs. This guide covers what suits Austin's ranch houses, what to choose first for a new or established house and how to make one trip count.

Austin's ranch houses

Furniture that follows a long, low house

The City of Austin's own historic district records name the ranch house as the prevailing style in Rogers-Washington-Holy Cross, and say ranch and midcentury modern houses filled Aldridge Place's last lots in the late 1940s and 1950s. Ranch houses are built long and horizontal, spread across wide lots.

Furniture that follows those lines tends to look settled: a bench under a window, a buffet along the longest wall, a console behind the sofa. Keep tall case pieces to one wall, so the room still reads low.

  • Measure the longest wall before you shop, and leave walking room at each end.
  • A bench seats more people than chairs along one side of a long table.
  • Low ceilings favor wide pieces over tall ones.
  • A 1920s or 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival house, such as those on Harthan Street, takes hacienda pieces: carved mirrors, scrollwork and iron.

Where to start

Established room or new house?

The order you buy in matters as much as the pieces.

Adding to a furnished room: bring a photo of the room and the pieces staying in it, and choose one piece that changes the room rather than a set.

Starting a new house: begin with the rooms you use every day, the dining table and the bedroom, and let those pieces set the wood tones for the rest.
