Abilene and Buffalo Gap
Rustic furniture for Abilene bungalows and period houses
Most houses in Abilene's Sayles Boulevard Historic District went up in the 1920s, and many show bungalow, Prairie School or Moderne influences. Long, low pieces in live-edge wood, mesquite and leather from our San Antonio showroom suit those rooms. Here is how to choose, and how to shop from about four and a half hours away.
Sayles Boulevard
Bungalows along The Boulevard
The Sayles Boulevard Historic District covers about 12 blocks just southwest of downtown and was listed in the National Register in 1992. Its houses run from one to three stories, with bungalow, Prairie School and Moderne designs beside Tudor, Classical, Spanish Colonial and Colonial revivals. The original addition set aside small esplanades along its main street as parks, and the street became known as The Boulevard. In 1927 Hattie Sayles, who helped develop much of the area, built a one-story stucco Spanish Colonial Revival house with a red tile porch roof on Highland Avenue.
Bungalow and Prairie rooms favor horizontal lines and plain, honest wood: a live-edge console, a long table, a low bench. In a Spanish Colonial house like Hattie Sayles's, add leather and iron.
- Bungalow living room: a long, low console and a lamp on a natural wood base.
- Prairie School lines: live-edge tops on simple metal or slab bases.
- Dining room: a long table with woven leather chairs, or a bench along one side.
- Spanish Colonial Revival: leather seats, nailheads and iron.
